CRAFTSMANSHIP AND SUSTAINABILITY
HIGHLIGHTED AT 2009 CARE AWARDS

VICTORIA – West Coast gold was in abundance as a record number of projects were awarded top honours at the 2009 Construction Achievements and Renovations of Excellence (CARE) Awards. Project of the Year – Single Family was presented to “Island Residence” by Coastal Construction Ltd., which walked away with 6 Gold Awards, including Best Custom Millwork. Project of the Year – Development was awarded to “Balance” by Dockside Green, reflecting the importance of energy efficiency and sustainability. More than 300 builders, trades, and suppliers attended the gala event on Friday, Oct. 2 at the Fairmont Empress Hotel.                   

“The Projects of the Year indicate the importance of craftsmanship and environmental sustainability in the CARE Awards,” says Gordon English, Chair of the CARE Awards. “A record number of entries made for intense competition and the winners have certainly raised the bar for future awards.” 

Other multiple winners were Città Group, Gordon Hemsworth Construction Ltd., Concert Real Estate Corporation, Dockside Green, THE SKY IS THE LIMIT DESIGN, G.E. Miller Builder & Contractor Inc., Smithdesigns, and B Cubed Construction Ltd.

The 2009 People’s Choice Award was won by T.S. Williams Construction Ltd. & The Interior Design Group for “Metro Mountain.” During the summer, consumers cast hundreds of ballots for their favourite CARE Awards Finalist on display in malls and via the internet.

The award for Excellence in Creating Housing Affordability went to CHBA – Central Vancouver Island and their partners for the “Bowen Road Project.” The award for Best Heritage Project was presented to Abstract Developments Inc. for preservation of a heritage mansion by architect Henry Sandham Griffith. 

Built Green™ BC Builder of the Year was Città Group for their sustainable project at Oceanwood Estates. The Lifetime Achievement Award went to Chris Erb, SupErb Construction in Nanaimo for his volunteer work and many contributions promoting industry professionalism. Doug Bromage, Insight Holdings Ltd., also from Nanaimo, won the Building Better Futures Community Award for stylish, affordable housing tailored to both seniors and young people with limited incomes.
